LFA/RI is now accepting proposals for our 2015 - 2016 What Works! after school professional development series.

LFA RI What Works! 2015 - 2016:


This year’s LFA RI What Works! series will feature workshops demonstrating BEST PRACTICE in classrooms, schools, districts, and communities in Rhode Island. Workshops will be organized around threads that are defined by Indicators. It is understood and anticipated that workshops will crossover to address multiple threads. To make the identification process most effective and efficient, sessions will be color coordinated to the threads below. Presenters will identify the threads addressed by individual workshops on the Request for Proposal forms submitted to the conference planning committee.

Target audience for these workshops will include teachers, administrators, policy makers, school committee members, counselors, community leaders, higher education practitioners, and others.

A well-rounded, comprehensive education means that schools, parents, and communities work together to see that all children and youth are HEALTHY, SAFE, SUPPORTED, ENGAGED AND CHALLENGED. This conference will focus on ways that is happening in Rhode Island schools.


 Indicators: school culture; curriculum; health and well being of staff; access to health services; collaboration with community health partners; nutrition and physical activity


Indicators: school climate; behavior management; social-emotional skills; attention to adolescent and child growth and development; physical plant; social justice and equity concepts


Indicators: personalized learning; social/emotional skills; curricular, instructional and school improvement decisions are based on child and adolescent development; communication methods are varied and language appropriate for the community; staff is certified and credentialed; assessment is varied and ongoing; access to school counselors; families are partners; adults model prosocial behavior


Indicators: active learning strategies; citizenship and civic behaviors; decision making is inclusive; options and choices for extracurricular and cocurricular activities; community based  learning; students monitor learning; curriculum promotes real-world understanding



Indicators: challenging, comprehensive and relevant curriculum; data is collected and used effectively to support student learning and growth; school works with families to understand and plan for lifelong success; activities beyond the school day are relevant to college, career and citizenship; opportunities to develop critical thinking, problem solving and digital technology competency; high expectations for all; global awareness
